Presented at 2017 OAGEE Fall Conference from November 10th to November 11th, 2017
This session will provide an introduction and overview to the education package RESILIENCE: A TRILOGY ON YOUTH, IDENTITY AND WAR. Since 2010, Canadian/Iranian photographer Kiana Hayeri, a graduate of the photography program at Ryerson University, has been documenting youth in three countries impacted by conflict and war: Another Life (Syria), Beyond the Veil (Iran), and Born in War (Afghanistan). Iran, Afghanistan and Syria are three neighbouring countries with superficial similarities. Each country has experienced a recent, tumultuous history that has greatly impacted their young citizens. Each country has a population of fifty percent born between 1980 and 2000. We see the stories and images of this generation fleeing their countries, but we know little about them. They are renowned for their resilience and optimism, yet challenged by factors beyond their control. It may be easy to see them as different, but are they really? RESILIENCE will introduce you to groups of young people from each country whose lives and identities have been impacted by war. Participants should bring their own device to explore the project website. UPDATE: photographer Kiana Hayeri will also be in attendance!
