I made a grievous error in my 1st President’s Message in the latest issue of the Monograph as I was attempting to capture the character of an OAGEE Past President that I admired, Paul VanZant. I respected Paul’s determination, no nonsense and tell it like it is attitude when it came to the future of OAGEE and Geography in Ontario. In an attempt to describe a situation depicting Paul as the strong leader I know him to be I used the word “surly”, which most certainly detracts from the admirable geographic leadership that Paul has provided over the past 17 years. Nothing like offending the very person that you are seeking approval from.
Although the hard copies of the latest Monograph have already been sent out with this disparaging & offensive comment, it has be removed from the electronic copies available by clicking on the Monograph tab above.
In the future, I will attempt to be far more careful when choosing a word that could potentially paint an unfair and inaccurate picture of such a valuable member’s positive attitude and his enormous contributions to this organization. I have nothing but respect for Mr. VanZant and it was not my intention to offend.
Shawn Hughes OAGEE, President Ontario Association for Geographic and Environmental Education

OAGEE has undergone many changes in the new year. Recently, we reduced the number of print copies of OAGEE’s The Monograph. The Spring Issue of the Monograph was recently sent to all Subscribers, Individual Members, and Department Lead Teachers. Although only one copy was sent to every Department, all members can access an electronic copy of the Monograph by clicking on the Monograph tab above and logging in with their username & password. Each issue will be posted on the our website until the release of the next issue. So, the Spring issue of the Monograph will only be available online until the release of the Summer Issue.

Literacy and Support for ELLs Camp, 2013
August 19-22 Kempenfelt Conference Centre Barrie, Ontario
Subject leaders of English/Language, French as a Second Language, Geography, History, and Science, grades 7-12, are invited to participate in CAMP 2013. Participants will engage in professional learning with a goal to deepen their understanding of adolescent literacy and to build their capacity as subject specific adolescent literacy leaders. Over the course of the four days, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, ideas and insights from whole group and breakout sessions, with colleagues.
According to Ivan Ius, WCDSB:
"This Literacy Camp (sponsored by the Ministry and CODE) in August, has had phenomenal positive reception by campers who have attended. The cost is covered by the ministry but a deposit is necessary to hold your spot (cheque will be returned uncashed when you attend). This is a great PD & network opportunity, and also to enjoy the great resort facilities."

If you have ever attended an OAGEE Conference, you have experienced that feeling of being re-energized and revitalized when you step into the classroom on Monday morning. The amount of hands-on, classroom-ready material that you will receive will prove to be incredibly beneficial. Information for upcoming and past conferences can be found using the Conferences tab.
If you are not able to attend the conference, presenters from the Conferences are able to share their resources with OAGEE members. Select one of the conferences associated with this link or search the Conferences tab. |
