OAGEE Spring 2010 Conference - Toronto: Land Use and Water

Friday April 30
Registration Form: PDF format

Field Trip # 1: Land Use Study of Toronto Islands by Bicycle

Join us on a day-long land-use study of the largest urban carefree community in North America.  The Toronto Islands are a chain of small islands located in Lake Ontario just offshore from Toronto’s city center that provide shelter for the Toronto Harbour.  They are a popular recreational destination and are home to a small residential community and the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.  The islands are connected to the mainland by ferries. We will cover the entire island group which is approximately 230 hectares, including urban parkland, marinas and yacht clubs, the Toronto Island School and pockets of residential lands.  Participants will travel by bicycle (bring your own or rentals will be available) and use GPS units to collect data for further discussion.  This is a low impact trip.

Field Trip # 2 : Surveying and Mapping “ Green Toronto”

Using the City of  Toronto’s new five year plan “Live Green Toronto” as a starting point, discover the importance of individual actions and the role we all have in “greening” our city.  We will be focusing on front yards with respect to Being Water Wise and Creating Habitat.  Armed with TUSC’s “green” survey (done by iPod Touch) base maps, digital cameras and your power of observations, you will access how people who live in the area are “going green”.  The data collected is sent wireless.  Then using ArcGIS 9.1, you will map your results.  Completed maps invite an analysis of patterns and the identification of “award winning” properties as well as those which may need help.

Each field trip registration includes lunch and transportation.
