Why should Geographers should consider a Cemetery Study?
Why should Geographers should consider a Cemetery Study? A visit to Cataraqui Cemetery led by Rowland Tinline, Professor Emeritus , Dept. of Geography, Queen's University (retired) and Craig Boals, Operations Director, Cataraqui Cemetery. This field trip will demonstrate how a cemetery can bring to light many geographic concepts through observation and comparison. Cemeteries are easily accessible for most classes and, since they represent evolving cultural landscapes, they are excellent resources for examining geography and history. Their patterns of land use, design/layout and locational choices offer clear examples of the cultural and socioeconomic factors that shape the geography of our cities. To emphasize those factors, the field trip will examine the features of Cataraqui Cemetery then compare and contrast them with other cemeteries and those of the participant's localities. A side benefit of this trip is that the field trip takes place in one of Canada's recently designated National Historic Sites; the burial site of Sir J. A. Macdonald an excellent example of a rural reform cemetery to a movement that helped reshape the concept and location of cemeteries throughout North America.
Focus: Cultural and Historical Geography
World Heritage Sites - Perspectives for Geographers:
Visit 2 of Canada's designated "World Heritage Sites"! Explore Fort Henry and the Rideau Canal led by staff facilitator(s) from Parks Canada, Smiths Falls and St. Lawrence Parks Commission.
1.1 Billion Years of Earth History: Geology of the Kingston Area Field Trip
1.1 Billion Years of Earth History: Geology of the Kingston Area Field Trip led by Mark Badam, Curator of the Miller Geology Museum, Queen's University. Learn about the geology of the Kingston area. A short slideshow talk about the 1.1 billion year history of the area will be followed by a field trip to local rock outcrops. There you will see evidence of the long-gone mountain ranges, tropical oceans, and glaciers that have existed in this area at different times in the past.
Focus: Physical Geography/Geology. Target group: Grade 7-8-9 teachers
Renewable Energy in Ontario – Power for the people
Renewable Energy in Ontario: Power for the people, led by Prof. Warren Mabee, Dept. of Geography, Queen's University. Renewable energy (solar, wind, and biomass) is a hot topic in Ontario. The 2009 Green Energy and Green Economy Act was introduced with great fanfare and high expectations. Three years later, many across the province question the effectiveness of this Act and its role in rising electricity prices. We will use this trip to explore three locations around Kingston where renewable energy projects have been introduced. At each location we will discuss how physical geography has created opportunities for power projects, and the impacts of their development on both physical and human systems. We will start with the Wolfe Island Wind Farm, followed by brief stops at Lafarge Cement (where biomass-to-energy is being explored) and finally Canada's largest solar farm just south of Napanee.
Focus: Economic and Political Geography |
